Working Principle and Selection Guide for Fast Thermocouples

In steelmaking and foundry production, liquid steel temperature is a key parameter affecting steel quality and casting yield. Expendable fast thermocouples are the mainstream furnace-side solution thanks to their fast response, low cost and simple operation.

Working principle: the measuring head contains precious-metal thermocouple wires. When the tip is immersed in liquid steel, it generates a thermoelectric potential related to temperature; the companion secondary instrument converts the signal into a direct temperature reading, typically within a few seconds.

Selection tips: first, choose the calibration type according to the maximum temperature — different types use different wire materials with different upper limits; second, check the response time and success rate; third, make sure the protective paper tube length matches the lance and furnace depth.

Usage notes: keep paper tubes dry — moisture affects measurement and may cause failure; ensure sufficient immersion depth so the tip is fully immersed in the melt; record each reading promptly for process traceability.
